HOW TO SET UP A CHIMING CLOCK

An 'Enfield' Chiming Clock Movement with Pendulum.

Very carefully remove any protective packing from the movement. Remove the packing without pulling on the crutch and suspension, or hammers.

The pendulum bob hangs from the suspension - it hooks onto the stirrup-shaped end. The clock should be positioned on a level, steady, surface. Make sure the pendum is not touching the door or the backplate of the clock. Listen for an even tick. You may need to adjust the level of the clock to get the tick even. Go by ear rather than eye - you may need to prop small pieces of card under one end of the case.

The clock case can be made level later by adjusting the crutch for the situation that the clock will remain in. It is important to remember that whenever the clock case is to be moved to a new situation, then the crutch may need to be adjusted to get the pendulum into correct beat.

It is best not to fully wind the clock until you are sure that the strike, chime and time are all functioning as they should.

Always move the hands forward and allow the chime and strike to sound fully when setting the hands. The chime/silent lever is next to the '3' position - move up to chime. Down for silent. The strike and chimes will self adjust after an hour or so if the hands are moved.
